Washing Sensitive Skin

  • Gentle, gentle! Scrubbing doesn't clean your face better, it just makes it irritated and red. If you use a terry-cloth, one quick wipe is plenty to exfoliate and remove facial wash.

  • Stay away from products that contain alcohol or acidic chemicals. These ingredients may make for a nice texture or feel initially soothing, but they strip your skin of healthy oils and make sensitive skin irritated and red.

  • Use lukewarm water to wet the skin before applying facial cleanser. This opens up the pores so unhealthy oils can be removed. Beware of hot water, though! This will instantly make your skin feel tight and dry.

  • Use cold water to rinse. This closes your pores, keeping healthy skin oils in and dirty skin oils out.

  • Always use plenty of moisturizer, even on oily skin types. You'll know you need it when your skin feels dry. If you have oily skin, moisturizing regularly will help balance your skin's oils out.

At-Home Facial

Make an easy facial treatment at home with ingredients from your kitchen!

What you will need:
  • 1 T. YOGURT - Preferably raw and plain.
  • 1 T. HONEY - Preferably raw.
Mix these two ingredients together in a small bowl and apply a thin layer to your face and neck. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes and gently rinse off with lukewarm (not hot) water.

Raw yogurt acts as gentle exfoliant and removes dead skin cells, leaving soft, nourished skin behind. Raw honey is a humectant, drawing moisture from the air to rehydrate your skin.

Mix either (or both) of these ingredients into face masks for even more skin-nourishing benefits!

Why I Love Olive Oil

I love olive oil in salad dressing and spaghetti sauce, but rubbing it on my skin? I've heard a lot about how healthy olive oil is inside the body, but let’s focus on what it does on the outside!

People have recognized the benefits of olive oil for thousands of years. Olive oil has always been highly valued in food and health, and Biblically was used in cooking, medicinally, and for sacrifices and anointing.

The “first oil” of the olive, known today as extra-virgin olive oil, is the first cold-pressed extraction of oil, and is uniquely beneficial. The entire fruit of the olive tree is used, so unlike other vegetable and fatty oils, extra-virgin olive oil contains both fatty oil from the seed and essential oil from the fruit of the olive – a two for one deal! Extra-virgin olive oil also retains the color and fragrance of the olive.

A study conducted by Maria-Isabel Covas found that olive oil reduces inflammation. Another study conducted by Dr. Niva Shapira and Bob Kuklinski found that olive oil may help prevent malignant melanoma, or skin cancer, by protecting the skin against UV rays.

Used as a base in skin care products, the components of olive oil are carried through the skin and into the body, taking other beneficial ingredients (such as the addition of other essential oils or plant extracts) with it. Even by itself it nourishes and softens skin!

If you like the fragrance of olive oil like I do, try using it by itself to condition your hair. You will be amazed at how soft and healthy your hair will feel!

What is your favorite way to use olive oil? Have you noticed any health benefits from it?
